Dina Gathe

I’m that friend who always stops on a dime to photograph something nobody else noticed. Everyday scenes hold more than they seem to: a smell, a sound, the history of an object or place, all compressed into one moment of light, shape, and color. Usually, it’s an ordinary slice of everyday life transformed entirely by how the light cuts across it. I find an absurd amount of beauty, design, and quiet history in those fleeting scenes: the shapes they carve, a specific mood, a passing sound, all held inside a single pocket of time.

As a painter, my job is to translate whatever grabbed me and freeze that moment long enough for someone else to feel what stopped me.

Now based on the Olympic Peninsula, I left a corporate career to make room for this work and to have the time to take in the landscapes, street corners, and small daily occurrences that ground me.

Mostly self-taught, I paint in acrylics on panel, a medium that keeps pace with my need for spontaneity. I build each piece in quick layers of light and value, letting color and texture chase the feeling of the original encounter. Figures, when they appear, are less about specific identity and more about human presence, scale, and time.
